How Does Our System Work?
Entering a CNPJ with fewer than 14 digits.
Using repeated sequences (like 00.000.000/0000-00).
Copying/pasting with hidden spaces or special characters.
Mathematically valid example: 12.345.678/0001-95 (illustrative only).
Invalid example: 11.111.111/1111-11 (fails the check digit calculation).
Official change
The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service will begin implementing the alphanumeric CNPJ in July 2026 to expand the number of available combinations. The transition will be gradual and requires attention from teams that build or maintain systems that receive, store, and validate CNPJs.
The new format will be assigned to new registrations from July 2026. This does not mean every CNPJ will immediately contain letters.
Previously registered organizations will keep their numbers. The traditional numeric format will continue to exist and must remain supported.
The 8 root positions and 4 establishment-order positions may contain letters and numbers. The final 2 positions remain numeric check digits.
Fields, databases, APIs, regular expressions, imports, and integrations must no longer treat a CNPJ as a numeric-only value.
📘 What Is a CNPJ and Why Validate It?
The CNPJ (National Registry of Legal Entities) officially identifies companies and other organizations in Brazil. It has 14 digits and is usually written in the format 00.000.000/0000-00.
The structure is composed of: 8 base digits that identify the company, 4 digits that indicate the branch or headquarters, and 2 check digits (DV) calculated by a mathematical algorithm.
The validation checks whether the first 12 digits correctly generate the 2 check digits, following specific weights and sums. If the calculation does not match, the number is invalid.
